Our home town
Landscapers in Pontefract
Pontefract is where SH Landscapes & Driveways is based, so most of what we build here is close to home. Sean and his own team take on whole gardens as well as single jobs, from the first levels to the last fence panel.

One team for the whole garden
A garden makeover usually involves paving, drainage, edging, a lawn and a boundary, and those trades depend on each other. When one crew handles every stage, the patio height is set with the lawn in mind, the fence line is agreed before the slabs go down, and nobody is waiting on another firm. Sean plans the order of work himself and his own team carries it out, so you deal with the same people from start to finish.
- Indian sandstone and porcelain patios
- Artificial grass or fresh real turf
- Sleeper walls, raised beds and steps
- Fencing, decking and made-to-measure gates
Gardens that suit Pontefract homes
The town has a real mix of plots, and each asks for something different. Older terraces around Tanshelf and Monkhill tend to have compact yards where every metre has to work hard, while family semis in places like Carleton often have longer lawns that have been left to get tired. Post-war estates such as Chequerfield can have generous gardens with old concrete paths and fences due for replacing. We design around the plot you have, including how the sun moves across it.
- Small yards turned into usable seating space
- Long lawns split into patio, grass and beds
- Old concrete paths lifted and taken away
- Layouts planned around sun and shade
Dealing with levels and wet ground
Plenty of local gardens rise or fall away from the house, and a slope left unmanaged tends to mean an unusable lawn or a patio that sheds water towards the back door. Timber sleepers are a tidy way to create level terraces, with steps between them, and a patio laid to a gentle fall keeps rain moving away from the walls. Where a lawn stays soggy for days after rain, it is worth fixing that first, because new paving or turf will not cure a drainage problem.
- Sleeper retaining walls to create flat areas
- Steps built into the slope
- Patio falls set away from the house
- Land drains and soakaways where needed

Common questions
Can Pontefract landscapers work in stages if I cannot do the whole garden at once?
Yes. Sean can plan the full garden now and split it into phases, so a patio laid this year still lines up with the lawn or fence you add later. Just mention it at the visit so levels and drainage are set with the next stage in mind.
Do you draw up a garden design before starting?
Sean talks through the layout with you on site, marks out what goes where and brings samples, so the plan is agreed before work begins. If you already have a design or a clear idea from elsewhere, we are happy to work from that.
What access do you need for a terraced garden with no side passage?
Tell us at the quote stage, because it affects how materials come in and how waste goes out. We look at the route through or around the property during the visit and plan the job around it, including protecting anything along the way.
Should I get a driveway and a garden done together in Pontefract?
It can make sense if you plan to do both, because one team and one timeline means matching edges, levels and materials. Many of our jobs combine the two, though a clear plan for one area first is fine too.
