Selby and the Vale of York

Driveways Selby for flat, wet ground

Selby sits on flat land beside the River Ouse, and in many spots the water table is close to the surface. That means rain has little natural fall to carry it away, so the drainage plan matters as much as the finish. We design drives for Selby, Brayton, Barlby and the villages nearby with that firmly in mind.

Why a level plot is harder than it looks

A hill at least tells water where to go. On the Vale of York, a drive can look perfectly level and still hold puddles for days after a storm. We create a gentle fall in the surface and lead it somewhere useful, which might be a lawn, a border or a channel drain. Levels also have to stay clear of the damp-proof course of the house, and that can limit how high a new surface can rise.

  • Gentle falls formed in a level site
  • Finished height kept well below the damp course
  • Run-off directed to lawns and borders
  • Channel drains across garage and door thresholds

Soakaways and a high water table

A soakaway only works if there is dry ground for water to soak into. Where the water table sits high, the pit can fill from below and then do nothing when it rains. That is why we dig a test hole and look at the ground before recommending one, rather than treating it as a given. If it will not work, there may be other options, such as a shallower spread-out system or, with the sewerage company's consent, a connection to a surface water drain.

  • Trial hole before a soakaway is specified
  • Percolation checked on the actual ground
  • Land drains for lawns that sit wet in winter
  • Other outlets considered when a soakaway will not work

Choosing a surface for Selby homes

Resin bound lets rain pass through, but the base underneath also has to be permeable for the water to get anywhere, so we plan them together. Block paving can suit too, and gravel with block edging is a sensible, free-draining choice for a rural plot around Riccall or Osgodby. Most new estates and older semis near Thorpe Willoughby and Brayton have enough frontage for a brick-edged drive. With the Abbey as the centrepiece of town, older properties nearby may call for a quieter colour.

  • Resin bound on a permeable base
  • Contained gravel for country plots and long lanes
  • Brick or block edges to hold a clean line
  • Fencing with concrete posts on damp ground

How the job works

  1. 1Dig a trial holeWe look at what lies beneath the surface and how close the water is, before settling on a design.
  2. 2Map falls and outletsLevels are taken from the house outwards, and each part of the drive is given somewhere to drain.
  3. 3Install the drainagePipes, channels and any land drains go in before the base, so that nothing has to be dug up later.
  4. 4Lay in the right weatherSurfaces are finished when conditions allow, because resin in particular should not go down on a wet base.

Why homeowners choose us

  • We will not fit a soakaway just because it is the usual answer, and you will hear the reasons for what we suggest.
  • Gary Dakin on Bark: "He kept us informed all the way through, explaining each process."

Common questions

Does a high water table in Selby rule out a soakaway?

Not always, but it often limits them. A test hole shows how close the water is, and if it is too high we will look at other ways to deal with the rain.

Why does water sit on my level Selby driveway?

Usually because the surface has no real fall, or has settled into dips over time. Relaying with a built-in fall and a channel drain is often the cure.

Is a resin drive sensible on low-lying Selby ground?

Yes, provided the base is permeable and the water has a route away. If the ground beneath stays saturated, we may suggest extra drainage so the surface can do its job.

Do you cover villages around Selby?

Yes. We can come out to the villages around town as well as Selby itself. Send your postcode and we will confirm.
