Land drains, soakaways and channel drains that clear waterlogged lawns and stop water sitting against your home.
Garden Drainage
Garden Drainage by a City & Guilds approved team
If your lawn squelches for days after rain, or water sits on the patio and creeps towards the back door, the garden needs somewhere for that water to go. Garden drainage collects it below or at the surface and carries it to a soakaway or another suitable outfall, so the ground can dry out and the space can be used again.
The right fix depends on why the garden is wet, whether that is heavy clay, a slope that sheds water onto your plot, or compacted soil left behind by building work. Sean looks at the cause first, then we install land drains, French drains, patio channels and soakaways across Pontefract and West Yorkshire, and put the lawn or paving back properly afterwards.
A lawn you can use
Drains take away the standing water that leaves grass yellow, mossy and too soft to walk on.
Water away from the house
Patio channels and correct falls stop rain collecting against walls and door thresholds.
Protects new landscaping
Sorting wet ground first gives turf, artificial grass and paving a stable base to sit on.
The cause, not the symptom
We work out where the water is coming from before choosing a method, so you only pay for what will help.
How it works, step by step
- Step 1
Find the source
We look at where water gathers, the slope of the plot, the soil and any existing drains.
- Step 2
Test and plan
A trial hole shows how the ground drains, which decides the route and where the water can go.
- Step 3
Dig and lay
Trenches are dug to a steady fall, then lined and filled with pipe and clean stone.
- Step 4
Reinstate
Soil is put back, the ground is levelled and the lawn or paving is finished so the route is barely visible.

What is the difference between a French drain and a land drain?
The terms are often mixed up. A land drain is usually a perforated pipe buried under a lawn to pull water out of the soil, while a French drain is a stone-filled trench, often with a pipe inside, that catches water along a boundary or slope. Many gardens need a combination.
Where does the water go from a garden drain?
Usually into a soakaway within your garden, as long as the ground will accept it. On heavy clay, water soaks away very slowly, so we look at other options at the survey. It should not be directed onto a neighbouring property.
Will installing drainage ruin my lawn?
Trenches do disturb the lawn along their route, but the ground is reinstated afterwards. If the lawn is already in poor condition, it is often best to fit drainage first and then lay new turf or artificial grass over the top.
