Front walls, pillars and steps built to match your new driveway and home.

Brickwork & Garden Walls

Brickwork & Garden Walls by a City & Guilds approved team

A new front wall and pillars can completely change the look of a property, framing your driveway and giving your home a smart, finished boundary. We build brick garden walls, pillars, steps and retaining walls to match your house and new driveway.

We carry out brickwork across Pontefract and West Yorkshire, usually alongside a new driveway or garden so the whole frontage is finished together.

Is a brick wall right for your boundary?

Masonry is the natural pick where a frontage needs permanence, and a wall tied to the house bricks ages alongside the building rather than being replaced every decade or two. Corner plots and homes wanting a formal entrance benefit most. Long rear boundaries are a different proposition, since foundations and labour add up fast, and a panel fence offers the same privacy for far less disruption. Tall tree roots and shrinkable clay soil are warning signs too, because either can shift footings and crack rigid brickwork. Sight lines deserve attention beside a driveway, as a high pier can hide pedestrians from anyone reversing out. A single skin should never be trusted to hold back soil; retaining work needs a thicker, reinforced design. For low planting edges, a sleeper bed may be simpler and cheaper.

Movement joints and frost-resistant bricks

Garden walls face harsher conditions than houses, with rain and frost on both faces. House bricks described as moderately frost resistant can spall when saturated, so exposed work calls for F2 rated units, which are made for severe weather. Mortar should be matched to that exposure as well, because a mix that is too weak crumbles while an overly strong one forces cracks through the brick itself. Clay expands slowly over its life, and a long uninterrupted run will crack unless vertical movement joints are provided, commonly about every six metres for freestanding work. Piers add stability along the length. A damp-proof layer below the coping keeps water out of the core, while copings that overhang with a drip edge throw rain clear of the face, preventing the green staining and frost damage seen on poorly capped walls.
