Low-maintenance lawns

Artificial Grass in Pontefract

Some lawns never really recover, whether that comes down to shade, dogs or constant football. Artificial grass solves those problems when it is fitted over the right base, and our Pontefract team takes care of everything from clearing the old lawn to the final brush.

Lawns that real grass struggles with

Artificial grass makes the most sense where a natural lawn keeps losing the battle. Enclosed back gardens on older terraces can sit in shade for much of the day, so moss takes over. Dogs wear tracks along the fence and leave yellow patches, while children turn the goal area into mud by November, and new-build plots around the edges of town can have thin topsoil over compacted ground. If your garden gets plenty of light and you enjoy mowing, real turf may be the better answer.

  • Shaded yards where moss has taken over
  • Worn tracks and patches from dogs
  • Muddy goalmouths and play areas
  • Thin soil on some newer plots

What goes under the grass matters most

Poorly prepared lawns often look fine for a season, then start to ripple, smell or sink. The usual reason is that the grass was rolled over ground that was never dug out or built up. We dig out the old lawn, then build a compacted, free-draining base and add a weed membrane, so rain and pet urine can pass through rather than sit under the pile. Ground around Pontefract varies from one garden to the next, so we check how yours drains before deciding how deep to go.

  • Old turf and soil dug out and removed
  • Compacted, free-draining base
  • Weed membrane beneath the grass
  • Joins secured so they stay out of sight

Edges, patios and small front gardens

The edge is what makes artificial grass look finished, which is why we fix it with block or timber borders rather than leaving it to curl. Because we also lay paving, the lawn can be planned alongside a new patio so that levels meet cleanly and the mower-free space feels deliberate. It also works well on small front gardens, where a neat green panel framed by herringbone blocks softens the front of the house without any weekly upkeep.

  • Block paving or timber edging
  • Levels matched to new or existing patios
  • Neat green panels for front gardens
  • Choice of pile heights and grass styles

How the job works

  1. 1Test the groundSean looks at the shade, the slope and how the lawn behaves after rain, and brings grass samples.
  2. 2Strip the old lawnTurf, roots and soil are taken out to the right depth and removed from site.
  3. 3Build a drainage layerStone is spread, levelled and compacted, then the membrane is rolled out over the top.
  4. 4Roll, join and brushThe grass is cut to fit, the joins are secured, the edges are fixed and the pile is brushed up.

Common questions

Does artificial grass get hot or smell in a Pontefract garden?

Like any synthetic surface it can feel warm in strong direct sun, and a rinse helps. Smell usually comes from a base that does not drain, so getting that right matters most. For pet owners, regular rinsing keeps it fresh.

Can artificial grass go on top of concrete or an old patio?

It can work if the surface is sound and water can get away, though it needs a foam underlay and a suitable fall to avoid puddles forming underneath. Sean will check whether that is sensible or whether lifting it would give a better result.

Is a small back yard worth covering in artificial grass?

Often, yes, particularly a shaded yard where real turf will not thrive. A small green area also breaks up paving nicely. On a tight plot we would talk about how much to grass and how much to pave so that the space works day to day.

Can I keep my flower beds when the artificial lawn goes in?

Yes. The lawn can be cut around existing beds, and we can edge them in block or timber, or build sleeper beds if you want a stronger shape. Let us know what you want to keep and we will protect it during the work.
