Choosing real turf, and when to pick another surface
Living grass is a strong choice for a sunny plot with decent soil and owners happy to push a mower. Children get a cooler, softer place to play, pollinators and birds benefit, and the ground keeps absorbing rain. Seed can suit a very large area or a patient gardener, although it means weeks of protecting bare soil from birds and foot traffic. Rolled lawn avoids that wait but struggles anywhere receiving under a few hours of direct light. Boggy clay should be improved first, or the new roots will sit in water and yellow. Narrow side passages, heavily used dog runs and spots beneath dense trees tend to wear through quickly. Such places are usually better paved, gravelled or planted with shade-tolerant ground cover, leaving grass for the open, brighter parts.
Turf watering and why new lawns fail
Freshly cut rolls start deteriorating on the pallet, especially in warm conditions, so they should go down within about a day of delivery. After laying, thirst is the biggest threat. Gaps opening between strips mean the sods have shrunk, and edges curl first because they dry from both sides. Soak the area until water reaches the soil below, checking by lifting a corner, then repeat early in the morning or at dusk through any dry spell. Little and often encourages shallow roots, whereas a deeper soaking draws them downward. Autumn laying needs less attention, but a wet-looking surface can hide dry ground. Overdoing it on heavy land brings the opposite problem of soft, yellowing patches. Wait to mow until gentle tugging shows the strips are anchored, and take only the top third.

When can I walk on new turf?
Keep off it as much as possible for the first couple of weeks while the roots establish. We will give you aftercare advice on watering and the first cut.
What is the best time of year to lay turf?
Spring and autumn are ideal, but turf can be laid most of the year as long as the ground is not frozen or waterlogged and it is watered well in dry weather.
Can you fix a bumpy, uneven lawn?
Yes. We can strip the old lawn, re-level the ground and lay fresh turf for a flat, even finish.
