Fencing & Decking
Fencing & Decking by a City & Guilds approved team
Good fencing gives you privacy, security and a tidy boundary, while decking creates a warm, practical space to sit out. We install fence panels on concrete posts with gravel boards, which last far longer than timber posts set straight into the ground.
We also build made-to-measure gates and custom decking for homes across Pontefract and West Yorkshire, and we will send you panel options to choose from before we start.
Built to last
Concrete posts and gravel boards keep timber off the ground and out of the wet.
Privacy & security
Solid, well-fixed fencing for a secure, private garden.
Made to measure
Gates and decking built to suit your space and style.
Choose your style
We send panel examples so you can pick the look you want.
Fence, deck or something else? Picking the right structure
Closeboard or slatted panels are sensible on an open boundary needing privacy, though exposed hilltop plots may fare better with a design that lets gusts pass through. Solid screens take the full force of a gale, and hit-and-miss styles reduce that load while still blocking views. Hedges suit people who prefer a softer edge and will accept years of growing and clipping. Boundaries also carry legal limits, with planning consent usually needed above two metres, or above one metre beside a highway. Decking, meanwhile, shines on a sloping site or above a difficult surface, because it spans uneven ground without tonnes of fill. Boards in constant shade can get slimy, however, so a damp north-facing corner might be happier under stone. Composite boards reduce the yearly treating that softwood needs, at a higher initial outlay.
Fence post depth and why fences blow over
Wind treats a panel fence as a sail, so nearly every collapse starts at ground level. A useful rule is to bury about a quarter of the post, meaning around 600mm for a fence standing six feet high, and more on exposed ground. Shallow holes dug to save time let posts rock, which loosens the concrete collar. Soft or recently dug soil around a boundary calls for a wider footing. Holes should be cleared of loose spoil, the post plumbed in two directions and the mix given time to harden before panels are slotted in. Trimming the top of the concrete to shed water helps as well. Panels fitted too tight can jam when swollen, whereas a small tolerance lets them move in the channel without rattling or cracking the slots.

FAQs
Fencing & Decking: your questions answered

Why use concrete fence posts?
Concrete posts do not rot, so they outlast timber posts by many years. With gravel boards at the bottom, the timber panels stay off the ground too.
Do you take away the old fence?
Yes. We remove and dispose of old fencing as part of the job and leave your garden tidy.
Can you build a gate to fit an unusual gap?
Yes. We make gates to measure, so awkward widths are not a problem.
