Fences and gates

Fencing in Pontefract

If your fence has started to lean, rot at the base or rattle in the wind, a new one built on concrete posts should end that cycle. We fit fencing and gates for homes all over Pontefract, working from our base in the town.

Why fences fail, and what we fit instead

Most garden fences give up at ground level. Timber posts sit in wet soil, soften at the base and then a windy night pushes the whole run over, even when the panels themselves still have life in them. We set concrete posts and add gravel boards along the bottom, so no timber touches the ground. If a panel ever gets damaged, it can slide out of the post and a new one can go in, without disturbing the rest of the line.

  • Concrete posts set firmly into the ground
  • Gravel boards lifting panels clear of wet soil
  • Damaged panels can be swapped individually
  • Old posts dug out and removed

Boundaries, heights and neighbours

Before a fence goes up, it pays to know who owns it. Your title deeds may show responsibility for a boundary, though many are silent, so a friendly word over the fence is often the best first step. As a general rule a fence can be up to 2 metres high without planning permission, or 1 metre beside a highway, with some exceptions. Corner plots and homes near Pontefract town centre deserve a closer look, and Sean will happily talk it through.

  • Check your deeds for boundary responsibility
  • Speak to neighbours before the work starts
  • Lower limits often apply next to a road
  • Extra care on corner plots

Gates, side passages and awkward runs

Pontefract has plenty of properties where a standard gate simply will not fit, from narrow passages between semis to wide openings at the back of older terraces. We make gates to measure so they hang straight and close properly, rather than forcing a stock size into the gap. Fence lines that step down a slope are handled in level sections, so the top looks tidy. If you want decking too, we can build it while we are there.

  • Stepped runs on sloping gardens

  • Decking added as part of the same job

How the job works

  1. 1Walk the boundaryWe measure every run, note any slopes and check what is growing along or through the old fence.
  2. 2Choose your panelsSean sends you panel examples, and you agree the style, the height and any new gate.
  3. 3Strip out the old linePanels and rotten posts come down and leave site, keeping the boundary in the same position.
  4. 4Set posts, then hang panelsConcrete posts go in first, followed by gravel boards, panels and gate hardware.

Why homeowners choose us

  • Alison Webb wrote: "Sean sent me fence panel examples to choose from."
  • Old panels and posts are taken away, so there is nothing left behind for you to dispose of.
  • As a local Pontefract team, we are straightforward to reach if you have a question after the job.

Common questions

Can you replace just the broken sections of my Pontefract fence?

Often, yes. If the posts on either side are sound, a section can be swapped out. If the old posts are rotten, it is usually better value to replace that run on concrete posts, as the remaining timber is likely to fail soon too.

Who is responsible for the fence between me and my neighbour?

There is no single rule. Check your title deeds first, as some show who maintains each boundary. Many do not, in which case it comes down to agreement, so a conversation with your neighbour before work starts usually saves trouble.

Will a new fence stand up to strong winds?

Concrete posts and gravel boards give a much sturdier structure than timber posts in wet soil. Solid panels do catch the wind, so on an exposed boundary Sean will talk through post depth and which panel style makes most sense.

Do I need to clear plants away from the fence line before you start?

It helps if anything you want to keep is moved or cut back beforehand, as the team needs room to dig post holes. Point out any favourite shrubs or climbers at the visit and we will plan around them where possible.
