Custom decking, Leeds

Decking in Leeds for Sloping Gardens and Raised Back Doors

Many Leeds homes step out onto a drop, not a flat garden. Decking solves that with far less digging than a built-up patio, giving you a level platform straight from the back door. We build custom timber and composite decks on a solid, ventilated frame, with balustrades where the height calls for them.

Why decking suits the hills of Leeds

Streets around Meanwood, Headingley and Calverley sit on steep ground, so back gardens often fall away from the kitchen door. Building that gap up in stone means heavy retaining walls and a lot of fill. A framed deck spans it on posts, needs less material brought in and leaves ground drainage alone. It also keeps garden furniture level with the house, which makes the space feel like part of the room.

  • Level access from kitchen or lounge doors
  • No heavy fill behind retaining walls
  • Ground beneath left to drain naturally
  • Steps down to the lawn built in

Choosing boards for damp, shady conditions

Timber has a warm, natural look and can be restained as it ages, but it does ask for regular care. Composite boards cost more at the start and tend to need little beyond a wash, which suits shady Leeds gardens that stay damp. Whatever you choose, a deck under trees will pick up leaves and algae if left alone, so a yearly clean is sensible. Grooved boards and good spacing help water leave the surface faster.

  • Timber for a traditional, natural finish
  • Composite for lower upkeep
  • Board gaps that let water drain through
  • Balustrade styles to match the house

Raised decks, neighbours and planning

Height is the main thing to check before you commit. A deck over 300mm above ground level will normally need planning permission, and a raised platform can overlook neighbours in close-set Leeds streets. Sometimes a lower deck with two steps down from the door gives you the same use with fewer questions. We will talk through both options, and if a level patio would serve you better on flat ground, we will say so.

  • Lower decks that avoid overlooking
  • Balustrades on raised edges

How the job works

  2. 2Clear the ground and set footingsThe area is cleared, a weed barrier is laid and supports are fixed on firm footings.
  3. 3Build the frameJoists go in level with space for air to move underneath, which helps keep the timber dry.
  4. 4Board out and finish edgesBoards, fascias, steps and balustrades are fixed, and offcuts are cleared away.

Common questions

Is composite or timber decking better for a damp Leeds garden?

Composite generally copes better with damp and shade and needs less upkeep. Timber looks natural and can be recoated over time. We can show you both and talk through the trade-offs.

How high can a deck go before I need planning permission?

As a general rule, a platform more than 300mm above the ground needs planning permission. Check with Leeds City Council for your property, especially if it is listed or in a conservation area.

Can decking be built over an old cracked patio in Leeds?

Sometimes, provided the old patio is stable and water can escape from underneath. If it holds water, we would rather lift part of it so the frame stays dry.

Do raised decks need a handrail?

A balustrade is a sensible safety measure on any raised edge, particularly with children around. We will recommend what suits the height and can match it to your home.
