Resin bound driveways, Barnsley
Resin driveways in Barnsley for sloping drives
A drive that climbs to the garage or drops towards the house needs more thought than a flat one. We plan the gradient, the drainage and the base before any resin is mixed, then hand-trowel a smooth, permeable finish. Sean will visit, measure the slope and bring blends to compare.

What a hillside means for a resin drive
Steep streets are part of Barnsley life, and many drives run uphill to a garage or fall towards the front door. Resin mix can be worked on a gradient, but it takes a careful hand and the right conditions so it does not creep before it sets. A very steep drive may be better served by another surface, or by a change in layout. We would sooner tell you that at the survey than find out on the day.
- Gradient measured along the full length
- Honest advice if resin is not the best option
- Laying planned around weather and temperature
- Grip and finish discussed before you commit
Keeping water away from the house and garage
Porous resin handles normal rain, but on a slope some water still travels downhill through the base, especially over slow-draining clay. If your drive falls towards the property, a channel drain across the bottom is simple protection against wet thresholds and damp garage floors. Drives falling towards the road need care too, as water should stay within your boundary. We decide on these details early, because they cannot be added neatly once the surface is down.
- Channel drains at thresholds and garage doors
- Soakaways where ground conditions allow
- Permeable base built to the correct falls
- Surface water kept off the public road
Old concrete, cracks and settled ground
Decades-old concrete drives are common around Worsbrough, Cudworth and the other former pit communities, and many have cracked or dropped at the joints. Overlaying those faults usually sees them reappear through the resin, however well it is trowelled. Taking up the slab costs more at the start but gives you a surface built on something sound. Where the concrete turns out to be solid and well-fallen, we can look at the simpler route.
- Cracks, joints and sunken areas checked
- Old slabs broken out and removed where needed
- Compacted new base for a lasting finish
- Sound tarmac or concrete overlaid only where suitable
How the job works
- 1Survey the slope and the slabWe measure the gradient, inspect what is underneath and see where rainwater currently goes, then bring blends for you to compare.
- 2Dig out and set the fallsAny failed surface is removed, edging is fixed, and the base is built to direct water where it should go.
- 3Fit drains ahead of the surfaceChannel drains and any soakaway connections go in now, so the resin can finish neatly against them.
- 4Lay from the top of the driveResin is mixed in batches and trowelled to a consistent finish, then left to cure before anyone drives on it.

Common questions
How steep can a resin driveway be in Barnsley?
There is no single answer, because it depends on the length of the slope, the aggregate and the conditions on the day. We measure yours at the visit. If we think resin would be a struggle, we will suggest an alternative such as block paving.
Is a resin drive slippery on a hill in winter?
Resin bound surfaces are textured and drain well, which helps, but any driveway can get icy in a hard frost. Barnsley gets its share of cold nights, particularly on higher ground. Keep that in mind on a steep drive, and ask Sean about it before you choose a surface.
Why has my old Barnsley concrete driveway cracked so badly?
Age, frost, tree roots, a thin slab or movement in the ground can all be behind it. Whatever the cause, we check whether the slab is stable enough to keep. If not, it is better removed than covered.
Do I need a drain at the bottom of a sloping resin driveway?
If it falls towards your house or garage, a channel drain is usually a good idea, even with a porous surface. It catches heavy rain and carries it to a suitable outlet or soakaway. Our soakaway guide goes into more detail.
