Patios in Leeds: Sandstone and Porcelain Laid to Last

A patio in Leeds has to deal with damp, shade and, often, a change of level just outside the back door. We lay Indian sandstone and porcelain on a full mortar bed over a solid sub-base, with falls that send rainwater away from the house. The result is an outdoor room that stays flat, dries off well and feels finished.

Sandstone or porcelain for a Leeds climate

Indian sandstone has natural variation and a warm, traditional feel that sits comfortably beside older brick. Porcelain is denser, so it shrugs off stains and is easier to keep clean in a damp, shaded corner where algae tends to gather. Pale stone brightens a dark yard, while charcoal tones suit the clean lines of a modern extension. We bring both to the visit so you can see them in your own light.

  • Sandstone for a natural, varied look
  • Porcelain for shaded and damp spots
  • Colours chosen against your brickwork
  • Contrast borders to frame the paving

Steps, thresholds and levels at the back door

Rear extensions are common across Leeds suburbs like Roundhay and Horsforth, and bifold doors look best with paving close to floor level. A patio should normally sit about 150mm below the damp-proof course, or include suitable drainage where a flush threshold is wanted. On sloping plots, the choice is often between cutting into the bank and building up with a retaining wall. Each route changes how much waste leaves site and where the steps land, so we draw this out with you first.

  • Levels set against the damp-proof course
  • Channel drains at door thresholds
  • Sleeper or brick retaining edges
  • Steps sized for comfortable use

Falls, joints and what makes a patio fail

Rocking slabs and green puddles usually come from a poor base rather than poor stone. Spot-bedded slabs on five dabs of mortar leave gaps where water can sit and frost can lift them, which is why we use a full bed. Falls run gently away from the house, towards a lawn, border or drain that can take the water. Porcelain also needs a priming slurry on the back of each slab, or it may not bond.

  • Compacted sub-base, not just sand
  • Gentle fall away from walls and doors
  • Priming slurry behind porcelain slabs
  • Neat pointing, with joints left clean

How the job works

  1. 1Plan the layout on siteWe mark out seating and dining space, doors and paths, and measure the fall across the area.
  2. 2Excavate and build the baseSpoil is removed, drainage is added if needed and the sub-base is compacted to your levels.
  3. 3Bed each slab fullySlabs are set on a full mortar bed, checked for level and cut neatly around edges and drains.
  4. 4Point and leave it cleanJoints are filled, residue is washed off and the patio is handed over ready for furniture.

Common questions

Which paving works best in a shaded Leeds back yard?

Porcelain is often the easiest to live with in shade, because it is dense and easy to clean. A lighter colour also helps reflect what little daylight the yard gets.

Can a new patio go right up to my back door in Leeds?

It can, but the height matters. Paving should normally stay about 150mm below the damp-proof course, so a higher finish needs drainage and careful detailing at the threshold.

Do you lift an old concrete patio before laying a new one?

Usually, yes, as it lets us check the ground and set the correct levels. Everything we break out is removed. Sound concrete may occasionally act as a base, which we would discuss at the visit.

What stops a patio going green in the Leeds rain?

Falls that shed water, enough sun and airflow, and regular sweeping all help. Shaded stone will still need an occasional clean, and we offer that as a separate service.
