Block paved driveways, Leeds
Block Paving in Leeds, Built for Clay Ground and Daily Parking
Block paving is the driveway you can repair one section at a time, which is useful on the clay ground found across much of Leeds. We lay herringbone and bespoke patterns over a properly compacted sub-base, framed with kerbs and soldier courses. It is a straightforward, hard-wearing choice for busy family drives.

Why the sub-base decides how Leeds paving ages
Sunken wheel tracks are nearly always a ground problem rather than a block problem. Clay swells when wet and shrinks through dry summers, so a thin base over soft ground will move and take the paving with it. We dig down to firm ground and compact the sub-base in layers, which spreads the weight of a car across a wider area. Tree roots from mature suburban streets get the same attention before anything is laid.
- Excavation to firm ground, not just a skim
- Sub-base compacted in stages
- Soft spots dug out and rebuilt
- Tree roots near the drive checked first
Patterns and colours that suit Leeds homes
A brindle or red block usually sits well with the brick of older Leeds streets, while greys and charcoals are popular on newer estates around Garforth and Allerton Bywater. Herringbone at 45 degrees is the strongest common layout for turning cars. Stretcher bond and basketweave can suit paths or light use, but they are less suited to a car swinging in and out. A soldier course in a contrasting colour gives the drive a clean finish at the edges.
- Herringbone for turning and parking areas
- Basketweave or stretcher bond for lighter use
- Contrasting kerbs and soldier courses
- Combined block and resin designs available
When block paving is the right call, and when it is not
Being able to lift and relay a few blocks is a real benefit where gas, water or cable access may be needed. Joints do need occasional attention though, and a shaded drive under trees will attract more moss than a sunny one. Standard blocks on a front garden over 5 square metres also need drainage onto your own property, so permeable blocks are often the simpler route. If you want joint-free and low upkeep, resin or imprinted concrete may suit you better.
- Blocks lifted and relaid without redoing the drive
- Permeable blocks for front garden planning rules
- Channel drains where standard blocks are preferred
- Fair comparison with resin and imprinted concrete
How the job works
- 1Level and drainage surveyWe measure falls towards the house and road, then plan where rainwater will go.
- 2Dig out and remove wasteThe old drive is broken out and cleared, down to a depth that suits your ground.
- 3Set kerbs, then lay the blocksEdges are concreted first so the pattern has something solid to lock against, then blocks are cut to fit.
- 4Vibrate and jointKiln-dried sand is brushed in and the surface is compacted, tying the blocks together as one.

Common questions
Why does block paving sink on some Leeds driveways?
Usually the sub-base was too thin, poorly compacted or laid over soft clay. Sunken areas can often be lifted and relaid once the ground beneath has been rebuilt, without replacing the whole drive.
Can you reuse my existing blocks in Leeds?
If they are in good condition, sometimes, particularly for a small repair. Older blocks can be hard to match, so we will look at them on site and tell you whether reusing or replacing makes more sense.
Which block pattern is best for a sloping Leeds drive?
Herringbone is the usual choice, as the interlock resists blocks creeping downhill under braking. We set firm edge restraints too, which matter even more on a slope.
Can you extend a block paved drive to park a second car?
Often, yes, subject to space and the front garden drainage rules. If the crossing also needs widening, that needs separate approval from Leeds City Council.
