Artificial lawns, Barnsley
Artificial grass in Barnsley for steep lawns and small yards
Pushing a mower up a bank is nobody’s idea of a good Saturday. An artificial lawn solves that, and it can also bring some green to a small paved yard. We prepare the ground for your particular plot, then lay and edge the grass with our own team.

Follow the slope or level it first?
A gentle fall can often be kept, with the base shaped to follow the land so water runs off naturally. A steeper bank usually works better cut into a flat lawn behind a sleeper wall, which also gives children somewhere to play. Grass laid on a real gradient needs fixing securely along the top edge, otherwise it can drift over time. We will show you both options on your own plot.
- Gentle falls shaped into the sub-base
- Banks levelled with sleeper or block retaining edges
- Top edges fixed firmly to resist movement
- Water directed to a border, drain or soakaway
Small yards behind Barnsley terraces
Rows of terraced homes built for the mining era still line many streets in places like Grimethorpe, Goldthorpe and Wombwell, often with a compact yard at the back. Where those yards are paved or concreted, there may be no soil to dig at all. If the slab is sound and drains, a foam underlay and bonded edge can sometimes work, but standing water would need solving first. Otherwise we lift the surface and build a proper base.
- Existing concrete assessed before anything else
- Drainage checked, as water must still escape
- Foam underlay considered on sound hard surfaces
- Small areas cut neatly around drains and steps
Finishing against paths and patios
Artificial grass looks best when it has a clean line to meet, as with the grey patio and path in our photo. A paved mowing strip is not needed for cutting any more, but a defined edge still protects the grass and gives the garden structure. Taking the job on with a new patio lets us set both levels together, so the lawn sits just right. We can also add raised beds to soften a plain plot.
- Grass tucked in tight against paving
- Levels matched to patios and paths
- Block or timber edging for a crisp outline
- Raised beds and planting to break up the green

Common questions
Can artificial grass be laid on a steep bank in a Barnsley garden?
Moderate slopes are fine if the top edge is well secured and the base is firm. On steeper banks we usually suggest forming a level area with a low retaining wall, as it gives you a more usable lawn.
Can you put artificial grass over concrete in my Barnsley yard?
Sometimes. The concrete has to be sound and able to shed water, and a foam underlay helps hide imperfections and adds softness. If water pools on it or the slab is broken, we would recommend lifting it first.
Will strong wind lift artificial grass on an exposed plot?
Not when the edges are properly secured and the joins are well made. Exposed gardens on higher ground around Barnsley are one reason we take care over perimeter fixing.
Is artificial grass worth it for a very small back yard in Barnsley?
It can be, because a small area is simple to look after and instantly brighter. Children and pets also get a softer surface than concrete. Call 07860 510073 and Sean can tell you if your yard is a good fit.
